Chapter Six

Putting a yappy dog and a slightly soggy woman into his truck for a long drive on bad roads wasn’t exactly Jake’s idea of an easy time.

At least Dolly quickly stopped barking and curled up to sleep on her blanket at Jessamine’s feet. That saved his ears, but he couldn’t stop throwing looks at Jessamine to see if she was okay.

Leaving the Dalton Ranch had been a wrench for her. Cousins he hadn’t even met showed up to hug and kiss her goodbye, to ask her to keep in touch and trade phone numbers. They’d all done the same with Jake, and he was feeling a little overwhelmed himself—no wonder she’d gotten emotional.

After about twenty minutes of driving, she sniffled for the last time and fished a clean tissue from her bag. She blew her nose and sat back in the seat. “I’m sorry about all the tears,” she said.

He gave her a look. “Understandable. You won’t be seeing your family for a while.”

“No.” Her choked tone made him fear he’d start the waterworks again. But she only drew a deep breath and let it out.

Ahead of them, the sides of the road were piled high with snow and thick ridges from heavy plows made the surface more difficult to drive. After the hammering the state had taken, it was a wonder they could make the roads passable at all. Before leaving the ranch, her cousin Jeremy had offered Jake a set of tire chains, but he’d come prepared for anything and carried a set of his own in the back.

AJ had given him an approving nod at that news, and Jake couldn’t help but feel he’d passed some country boy test. It made him feel good, not that it mattered what AJ thought. All that mattered to him was Jessamine.

She suddenly gripped the console between them. “Oh no. What’s that ahead? I hope it’s not an accident.”

He geared down and slowed as they approached a big sign.

“Road closed in a mile! What the…” She turned to him. “How can they just shut down a highway like that?”

“They can if it’s too treacherous to pass. Damn.” He was beginning to wonder if she wouldn’t have been better off staying for Christmas in Colorado. The airport was a no-go for at least another day, maybe two, according to her cousins, but with these delays on the roads, it could take much longer by vehicle.

She retrieved her phone and began thumbing through a weather app. “It says it’s clear skies for at least five more hours. Plenty of time for us to get south.”

“Not if there isn’t a road to take us south,” he said.

“There has to be a road. How do ambulances and firetrucks get by?”

“Pretty sure they’re authorized to drive any road if necessary. But we aren’t.” He slowed and did a U-turn, heading the truck back where they’d come from.

Jessamine glared at him, at her phone and back to him.

“Listen, Beautiful, I can’t do anything about this. All we can do is look for another route.
